Heavily-armed gunmen on Sunday night abducted Chief Inengite Nitabai, who was said to be an uncle of President Goodluck Jonathan’s, in their home village of Otuoke, in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. Angola, Namibia and Nigeria are the fastest growing countries in Africa in terms of wealth per capita, according to a report by New World Wealth. The countries were ranked by wealth growth between 2000 and 2013. Angola recorded a percentage growth of 527 percent, Namibia had 289 percent and Nigeria recorded 275 percent growth. Zimbabwe came last on the list, recording a negative growth rate of 10 percent. Yesterday i wrote a story on a banker and stafff of Ecobank that was killed (In case you missed it read here) in police custody while his family was running around trying to raise money for his bail Mother of the late Ecobank worker, Babatunde Oke, has insisted that the police knew how her son died. Babatunde died under controversial circumstances while in custody of the Falomo Police Division, Lagos State, over allegation of N1.2m fraud. The man, who was attached to the bank’s branch in Ogba, was detained for three days by the police over his alleged involvement in the fraud. Alhaja Sidikatu Oke, 60, fighting back tears, told PUNCH Metro on Saturday that 35-year-old Babatunde died within 20 minutes she left him. Sidikatu explained that she had gone to withdraw money from the Automated Teller Machine in order to perfect her son’s bail. She said he did not show any sign of weakness and had only complained of mosquito bites for the period he was with the police.

Uganda's president has signed into law a bill toughening penalties for gay people and criminalising those who do not report them. A government spokesman said President Yoweri Museveni wanted to assert Uganda's "independence in the face of Western pressure". US President Barack Obama has cautioned the bill would be a backward step. Mr Museveni had previously agreed to put the bill on hold pending US scientific advice. Homosexual acts are already illegal in Uganda.

Borno state, Islamist militant group Boko Haram yesterday attacked Izge village again in the state. A source in the village told Saharareporters that the sect returned to the village last night and killed some people who are mostly elderly and burnt many houses with impunity. The source said there were no military personnel when the sect got into the town chanting war songs and shooting helpless villagers, while youths and some women fled through bush path in the night.
