Pope Benedict XVI, yesterday, told thousands who gathered for his weekly audience that he was resigning for “the good of the church”. He was given a standing ovation and most of the audience had tears in their eyes. A huge banner reading “Grazie Santita” (Thank you Your Holiness) was strung up at the back of the room. Ivorian Sets Him Self Ablaze To Protest Deportation.

A man from Ivory Coast doused himself with fuel and set himself on fire at Rome's Fiumicino airport on Thursday after showing officials a deportation order, police said. The incident occurred in a customs police office in Terminal 3 of the airport, Italy's largest. Police said the man had poured a canister of fuel over himself and ignited it with a lighter. The man was taken to hospital in serious condition while a policeman who put out the flames sustained a burn to his arm. The smoke caused alarm among travellers and a small part of the airport was briefly closed off. No other injuries or disruption were reported.

The National Youth Service Corps on Wednesday said  only eligible graduates, who pass through duly accredited, full-time courses from higher institutions, would be mobilised for participation in the forthcoming 2013 Batch ‘A’ scheme, scheduled for between March 6 and 26. A statement bythe Director-General of the NYSC, Brig. General Nnamdi Okorie-Affia, in Abuja said any prospective corps member, whose admission status was not known to JAMB, would be deemed to have been improperly admitted. He said, “Accordingly, the data of all prospective corps members, as submitted for mobilisation by their respective institutions, are subjected to screening for conformity with the requirements of these regulatory/examination bodies.“In this regard, all prospective corps members whose admissions are not known to JAMB will be deemed to be improperly admitted.

A 27-year-old woman, Mary Sunday, has been in the hospital bed at Igbobi Orthopaedic Hospital seven months after she was allegedly attacked by her fiancé, Corporal Isaac Gbanwuan, with a pot of boiling stew and a lighted stove. It was learnt that Sunday had lost her ears due to the attack. Before the attack, which took place in August 2012, Sunday, was to report for training at the Police Academy, Kano as a cadet officer.Still nursing severe burns to  her neck, chest and upper arms, Sunday can barely sit or walk straight. She holds her head stiffly and talks with difficulty as she recalled the events that led to her present state to PUNCH Metro on Wednesday.

Paralympic and Olympic star Oscar Pistorius has been charged with murder after allegedly shooting dead his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp at his Pretoria home. Her body was discovered at the athlete's home in the Silver Woods country estate in eastern Pretoria, South African police said. Pistorius reached the 400m semi-finals at the London 2012 Olympics. Initial reports in the South African media suggested Pistorius' girlfriend was apparently shot as she woke him, trying to surprise him on Valentine's Day.
