How To Teach Your Children About Race!
Although some kids may be raised in neighborhoods and families full of people that look like them, there will come a time when they are put in situations where they are around people that are different. It is very common for kids to first begin to identify their race by the colors that they find in a crayon box such as brown, orange, pink, red or any other color that they think looks like them, their family or their friends.
It would be ideal to raise our kids in a colorblind society, but the truth is, that is not the world that we live in. So when it comes time to have the conversation about race and ethnicity, a few tips can make it easier for you and your child.
1. Be a role model- Make sure to refer to yourself and those around you with the correct terminology. Also, make sure that you steer clear of derogatory language.
2. Keep the message age-appropriate- Try not to overcomplicate the lesson for young children.
3. Explore other cultures- Take your kids to festivals or events that celebrate people that are from different cultures or countries.
4. Find teaching moments- Give your child examples of how people may look different on the outside but are the same on the inside. One example is to take a lollipop that has bubble gum on the inside. Teach your child that the candies may be different colors on the outside but they are the same on the inside.
5. Don’t be afraid the talk about it- Race can be a hard topic to discuss but it can also be an important one. Teaching kids about our differences and similarities in the appropriate way can help them steer clear of prejudice and stereotypes in the future.
What are some ways that you’ve helped your child learn about race?
